About Us !

Venice Area Beautification Inc. (VABI)

Venice Area Beautification, Inc. (VABI) was founded in 1990 by the Venice Chamber of Commerce to spearhead beautification projects in South Sarasota County, including Venice and Nokomis.

In 1993, Sarasota County organized a Charrette to plan for future growth and development. A series of workshops gathered input from residents and culminated in an intensive weekend of presentations to determine priorities. The renovation of the historic train depot and the development of a linear trail along both sides of the Intracoastal Waterway emerged as top priorities for South Sarasota County.

Inspired by the vision of a recreational trail in the community, VABI took on these two transformative projects:

  • The restoration of the Historic Train Depot
  • The creation of a linear park along the Intracoastal Waterway, extending from the former Chamber Building near the Hatchett Creek Bridge to Caspersen Beach on the west side and from the Train Depot to Shamrock Park on the east side.

Since the depot is adjacent to the east side of the waterway, the two projects naturally complemented each other. One of the most spectacular outcomes of this initiative is the Venetian Waterway Park (VWP)—a sustainable public resource that celebrates the area’s natural beauty, history, and diverse community interests. VWP provides recreational, environmental, historical, and cultural value, leaving an enduring legacy for future generations.

VABI thrives thanks to its strong volunteer base, which includes landscapers, trail security teams, and community outreach efforts. The organization is proud to collaborate with partners such as the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice, Sarasota County, and the City of Venice to fulfill its mission of enhancing the beauty and livability of the area.

Venice Area Beautification Inc. (VABI)

Venice Area Beautification, Inc. (VABI) was founded in 1990 by the Venice Chamber of Commerce to lead beautification efforts in South Sarasota County, including Venice and Nokomis.

In 1993, a Sarasota County Charrette brought residents together to plan for future growth. Two priorities emerged: restoring the historic train depot and creating a linear park along the Intracoastal Waterway. Inspired by this vision, VABI took on both projects, which together led to the creation of Venetian Waterway Park.

Today, Venetian Waterway Park stands as a lasting public resource that reflects the area’s natural beauty, history, and community spirit. VABI continues its work through dedicated volunteers and strong partnerships with Sarasota County, the City of Venice, and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice, enhancing the livability of the region for generations to come.

Venice Area Beautification, Inc.’s mission is to enrich the quality of life for every resident of our community by nurturing and developing enhancement projects throughout the greater Venice area, making Venice a more beautiful place to live, work, and play.

What We Do

VABI leads and supports volunteer teams and community projects that help Venice stay beautiful, green, creative, and connected. Our work is guided by volunteer-driven stewardship, thoughtful planning, and strong community partnerships.

You can see our work throughout the Greater Venice area. Examples include colorful downtown flower baskets, restored heritage parks, public murals, and the Venice Urban Forest. These improvements are made possible through the generosity of donors, foundations, and partnerships with the City of Venice, Sarasota County, and many community supporters.

Powered by Volunteers 💪

One of the most special things about VABI is our intergenerational volunteer community. Students, working families, seasonal residents, and retirees work side-by-side to care for plants, restore parks, support events, and help nature thrive. Whether someone gives an hour a month or joins a team year-round, there is a place for them here.
